With The Lights On You Can’t See The Stars
One of the most interesting courses I took during my undergrad was astronomy.
There were a few things about that course that were memorable, such as seeing the moon's surface through a telescope, learning to identify constellations with the naked eye, and attempting to wrap my head around the vastness of the universe.
Yet, the most remarkable fact I took away from that class was actually quite obvious.
The stars are out 24 hours a day, the only problem is that when the sun is up we can’t see them.
So obvious, yet oddly poetic.
No matter what time of day, whether it is the summer solstice or a total eclipse, the stars are above you.
And that line, “with the lights on you can’t see the stars” is a saying that has stuck with me through the years. It has always served as a constant reminder that without reflection, and “turning the lights off” you will never see the stars that exist within your life, even if they are right in front of you.
Stars in a cosmic sense, are powerful balls of energy, they bring heat and life to the universe. Without stars, our universe would be a cold, dark place.
In our life stars are what bring us happiness. Our friends, family, hobbies, favorite foods, dogs, and anything that creates positive energy in your life. These stars create value and meaning within us.
These are the things we need more of. But, at times they aren’t always easy to identify.
Turn off the lights more often. Take a long look at the stars, you will never be able to grasp the beauty and complexity they bring to life, but it is fun to try.
Happy New Year.
