Most people only do what is instructed to them.
They are told to do X, they do X.
They are told to do Y, they do Y.
They don’t go above and beyond. They don’t do Z unless they are instructed to do Z. They don’t think of new ideas or new paths to take. They do what they are told and that is it.
It isn’t inherently bad. You need these types of people who you can rely on to get the job done.
The problem that arises from these scenarios is that it puts creativity in a box. Business is a game of infinite possibilities. Innovation is required to achieve. And innovation can come from anywhere. Innovation isn’t easy, but it isn’t hard. It just requires thinking and discussion. Innovation dies when an idea isn’t shared, or when it falls on deaf ears.
So what can you do?
Do something. Start trying to think. Creativity is a muscle. It must be used to be improved. Share your ideas, even if you think they are bad, or pointless. Bring people around you that are open to creativity, and if you are surrounded by people who detest creativity then reassess if you belong with them. Believe in yourself. If you truly believe that you can have an impact and that your ideas alone can make millions of dollars then you will already be halfway there.
I love this! Spot on advice for creatives!
