False Binary
Life is a mosaic of choices.
Throughout our life, we experience a multitude of decisions and options. In most of these circumstances the options are obvious, but not always. Today let’s explore the concept of false binaries.
To start what is a binary choice? A binary choice is a choice that has two options. Yes or no. Do or do not. We encounter these every day.
So, then what is a false binary? A false binary is a choice that is presented as a binary when in fact there are more than two options.
Coke or Pepsi?
Republican or Democrat?
Cash or card?
These are a few examples of obvious false binaries.
What about a non-obvious false binary? Non-obvious false binaries are where we can run into some trouble. With these, we can end up choosing the less-than-ideal option because we are unable to see all of the options. The options could either be purposely limited by the other party or we are just so caught up in the action that we are unable to see or think clearly.
Regardless, the outcome is the same. We are in a worse situation than if we could identify them.
Let’s use an example that better illustrates this.
Let’s say your company has been running a marketing program that has not been working too well. And two options are presented. 1. End the marketing program 2. Continue the marketing program. Those are the only two options, right? Not quite, within these two options there is a range of options. Put the program on pause for X months, introduce a new aspect to the program, target a new audience, position the product in a different way, etc. The options go on and on. The issue is that when you are in the heat of the discussion arguing between ending the program or continuing the program you aren’t able to see that you are looking at a limited number of options. You aren’t able to see all the options because you have tunnel vision of the options at hand. This can lead to disastrous outcomes.
So what should we do?
Here is the 3-step process to avoiding false binaries.
The number one way to avoid falling into a false binary is to question the options presented. Ask yourself “are there any options that I am not thinking of?” By taking a step back and more closely identifying the options at hand, you can increase your odds of finding alternative options.
Remain calm. Often in the heat of discussion, it is easy to focus on ways to reinforce your own thinking rather than look for alternatives. Don’t let your emotions control your decision-making or logic.
Be creative. Life is a game, approach it as such. This game is also a lot more flexible than most believe, don’t be afraid to test the limits.
Go out and question the world. Identify false binaries and become better equipped to succeed.
