Cast Iron Life
Cast iron cookware when cared for properly can last for 100s of years, which means that over its lifespan you can cook 10s of thousands of eggs, quesadillas, steaks, salmon filets, and more. Rather than buying a new pan every few years you can get one that will last the rest of your life, your children’s life, and your children’s children’s life. Isn’t that funny?
So what is the big deal? What can we learn from cast iron.
Buying cast iron is deciding to exit the materialistic treadmill.
Instead of constantly buying, buying, buying you can escape that. You can spend your time and money on other pursuits. Cast iron is a metaphor for a simpler life devoid of needless spending.
We should look for areas in our lives where we can buy once and for all, rather than buying things that we will eventually throw away and need to replace. We must also come to grips with the fact that this purchase will be our last. Once we buy a cast iron skillet we will never buy another skillet ever again.
But, why should you do this?
It makes life simpler. Strangely the desire to buy things makes life more complex. We have to research the product, find a good deal, and more often than not what we buy will let us down. A simpler life will without a doubt make us happier.
It will make you more disciplined. Spending money is easy. We all know that most of our purchases are unnecessary, but we convince ourselves that we need them. Being able to tell ourselves “no” is an important skill.
It saves money. Why buy things, when you don’t have to? This point is pretty obvious.
We can all aspire to live simpler lives.
