Be Who You Say You Are
Have you ever made a decision that feels perfectly aligned with the person you think you are?
Doesn’t it feel good? Like you are in harmony with yourself.
Where your decision matches you.
Now, think of the opposite. Have you ever made a decision that does not feel perfectly aligned with the person you think you are?
Doesn’t it feel bad? Like you don’t know who you are.
You look in the mirror and see a person you don’t recognize.
Why do we make decisions that aren’t in line with who we think we are? Is it out of desperation? Out of anger? Or, is it out of fear?
Fear that the world will reject the person that we think we are. Fear the world will shove us back in line and tell us to quiet down.
Is it that hard to be consistent with the internal narrative we tell ourselves?
I don’t believe that most people intend on being out of sync with the person they think they are. They make the easy decision. They fold at the first sign of pushback. Where the rubber meets the road they switch from the driver’s seat to the passenger’s seat. Immediately throwing aside the narrative they have so delicately painted inside their head on the person they believe they are and instead conforming to whatever is most convenient for the time. Like a chameleon changing colors.
Now, I am not saying that you must be this, that, or the other thing. I am saying you should be consistent with who you think you are. Superman doesn’t back down the second someone questions him. Have the courage to be the person you are.
It doesn’t matter who you are, as long as you are consistent.
