A Second Chance
In December of 2022, my girlfriend (Alec) and I adopted a dog named Frankie. We had been wanting a dog for a while, but the circumstances around how we ended up with Frankie were quite a surprise. Alec’s brother, Adam, had been driving home along a barren stretch of road in the middle of Central California when a dog ran out in front of his car. Adam decided to pull over and see if the dog was wearing a collar or had any way to identify the owners. What he saw was not a big strong dog, but rather a dog that was on the verge of starvation. Obviously having spent many nights on that desolate stretch of road he was not in great shape. Adam decided to throw him in the car and go around to the ranches around the area and see if anyone knew whose dog it was. After speaking with the locals it became evident that Frankie was a long way from home, and very likely was abandoned in the middle of the desert.
Long story short, Adam took the dog home, and Alec and I ended up with Frankie.
Now, what is the point of this? Why am I telling you the story of how we ended up with our dog?
You see, adopting Frankie and having him become a part of my life has been a transformative experience for a few reasons.
He was my first dog. With this came a lot of new responsibilities, but a lot of amazing memories that I will remember forever. I’ve realized that the memories and experiences that we create are what make life amazing
We saw him transform from a frail dog into a healthy, happy dog. We saw him regain his strength and grow an amazing vibrant coat. He went from hobbling around to running like a madman.
Perhaps the most impactful is seeing firsthand how much Frankie loves Alec and me. I never would have guessed that a dog that was left abandoned on the side of the road would be capable of giving so much love and having so much trust.
Spending time with my dog is time well spent. Whether it is taking him for walks, going to the beach, or just lying around the house. I have never spent time with Frankie and have been upset.
All this is to say that having Frankie become a part of our lives is one of the best decisions that we have made. If you are on the fence about getting a dog, I would recommend it.
Lastly, don’t abandon your dog.
